A 22-year-old woman from Indianapolis, Indiana, tragically drowned while vacationing in Puerto Rico after attempting to rescue her girlfriend from a dangerous rip current. Cimone (Alicea) Dawson was visiting Condado Beach in San Juan with her girlfriend and another friend when the group found themselves in a life-threatening situation.
On Sunday evening around 6:30 p.m., Dawson's girlfriend and their friend encountered trouble while swimming in the waters off the tropical island. Without hesitation, Dawson rushed into the sea to try and save her girlfriend, demonstrating the selflessness and bravery that those who knew her fondly remember. Unfortunately, as she tried to reach her girlfriend, Dawson became trapped in the same powerful rip current that had endangered her loved ones.
While Dawson's girlfriend was successfully rescued and brought back to shore by both local beachgoers and authorities, Dawson herself was pulled under the water by the unrelenting current. Bystanders at the beach reported hearing screams and seeing signs of distress from the group in the water. Tragically, despite immediate rescue efforts, Dawson could not be reached in time.
