In August 2022, Amber Nicole Thurman, a 28-year-old mother from Georgia, tragically lost her life after a 20-hour delay in receiving critical medical treatment. Her death, which has been described as preventable, was directly linked to the state’s stringent anti-abortion laws following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Thurman’s case has become a focal point in the ongoing national debate about access to reproductive healthcare and the impact of restrictive abortion legislation.
The Start of a Tragic Chain of Events
Amber Nicole Thurman was six weeks pregnant when she made the difficult decision to terminate her pregnancy. However, Georgia had recently enacted a law prohibiting abortion after six weeks of gestation, following the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overturned Roe v. Wade. Facing no legal options in her home state, Thurman drove to a clinic in North Carolina to seek an abortion.
The North Carolina clinic provided her with mifepristone and misoprostol, two medications used to terminate early pregnancies. These pills are generally considered safe and effective, but in rare cases, complications can arise. Thurman took the medication and returned home to Georgia.
