The Paris Olympics opening ceremony has sparked a cultural debate, particularly over a segment featuring French drag queens and queer artists dressed as Greek gods in Louis Vuitton costumes. The performance, intended to celebrate French art and fashion, has faced criticism from prominent conservatives who misinterpreted it as a desecration of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper."
Comedian Rob Schneider criticized the performance on social media, expressing his disapproval and stating he would boycott the Olympics.
Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, also denounced the performance as "a mockery of the Last Supper.
However, French organizers have clarified that the performance was not intended to reference "The Last Supper." Artistic director Thomas Jolly explained that the tableau featured Dionysus, the Greek god of festivities and wine, as a tribute to the gods of Olympus.
