ABC has given the green light to the multi-camera comedy "Shifting Gears," featuring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings in lead roles. Initially ordered as a pilot in March, the series has seen some adjustments both in its creative team and casting decisions as it gears up for production.
The original writing and executive producing duo, Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, have departed from the project.
Despite their exit, they will retain executive producer credits for the pilot episode. ABC is currently on the lookout for a new showrunner to steer the series forward. The show also undergoes a casting change, as Froy Gutierrez's role of Nick will be recast before the series goes into full production.
Plot and Characters
"Shifting Gears" centers around Tim Allen's character, Matt, a stubborn widower who runs a classic car restoration shop.
His life takes a dramatic turn when his estranged daughter, played by Kat Dennings, moves back in with her teenage children. The dynamics of family, relationships, and the challenges of blending generations set the stage for comedic and heartfelt moments as they navigate life under one roof.
The ensemble cast includes Daryl "Chill" Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter, and Barrett Margolis as Georgia, rounding out the household dynamics alongside Allen and Dennings.
