In the wake of a recent incident at Arlington National Cemetery, where members of Donald Trump’s campaign allegedly clashed with cemetery officials, First Lieutenant Jimmy McCain, the son of the late Senator John McCain, has announced his decision to support Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. McCain has also expressed his intention to actively assist Harris in any way possible to bolster her chances.
The altercation reportedly stemmed from Trump campaign staff attempting to film and photograph in restricted areas of the cemetery, a move McCain viewed as a significant disrespect to the sanctity of the site. Speaking to CNN, McCain, a 17-year military veteran, described the incident as a profound violation. “It just blows me away. These men and women that are laying in the ground there have no choice” of whether to be part of a political campaign.
McCain’s shift away from the Republican Party has been gradual. He has been registered as an independent and, more recently, as a Democrat. However, the Arlington National Cemetery incident appears to have been a decisive factor in his decision to support Harris.
