Get ready to binge on a royal love story with a Bridgerton twist! Netflix's latest offering, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, plunges into the captivating world of a young Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, thrust onto the global stage to marry King George III. But amidst the opulent ballrooms and whispered scandals, lies a story inspired by real history.
Imagine being a young woman, plucked from relative obscurity and thrust into the heart of the British monarchy. That's precisely the experience Queen Charlotte captures, albeit with a generous helping of Shonda Rhimes' signature flair.
"The series takes creative liberties, as any good period drama should," explains Polly Putnam, historical advisor on the show and Collections Curator at Historic Royal Palaces.
Shipped off to England to wed a man she'd only met once, the real-life Charlotte faced a daunting new world. She had to master a new language, adapt to the rigid etiquette of the English court, and win over a skeptical public.
"It's easy to forget how young Charlotte was when she arrived in England," Putnam points out.
