Hold onto your bonnets, Bridgerton fans, because we need to talk about Eloise. Specifically, we need to talk about why her book storyline is a disaster waiting to happen, and why the showrunners need to throw it out the window (along with any corsets that are too tight).
Eloise Bridgerton, the witty, independent, and fiercely feminist sister, deserves a love story that reflects her unique spirit. Unfortunately, her book, To Sir Phillip, with Love, falls short, to put it mildly.
The prologue alone is enough to make any modern romance reader cringe. Sir Phillip Crane, Eloise's intended love interest, is introduced as a widower whose wife, Marina, was deeply depressed.
“Yikes! Can you imagine any of this playing on TV?!” one fan exclaimed on a Reddit thread. “This man is supposed to be a dreamboat!”
And it doesn’t get much better from there. Phillip, motivated by his need for a new wife to raise his children, responds to a condolence letter from Eloise.
