John F. Kennedy Jr., often regarded as American royalty, was a symbol of hope and the heir to the Camelot legacy following the assassination of his father, the 35th president of the United States. Tragically, 25 years ago, his life was cut short in a plane crash that also claimed the lives of his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette.
The Day of the Tragedy: July 16, 1999
JFK Jr., at 38 years old, planned to attend the wedding of his cousin, Rory Kennedy, in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, upset and feeling neglected by her husband, was initially reluctant to join him. Her sister, Lauren, decided to accompany them partway, intending to spend the weekend with friends in Martha’s Vineyard.

The Aftermath
July 17, 1999: Early the next morning, JFK Jr.'s family contacted the Coast Guard when his plane did not arrive. Search and rescue efforts began, but by the end of the day, debris, including Lauren Bessette’s suitcase, was found near Martha's Vineyard, dampening hopes for survivors.
